Red Hot Silvia

The Nissan 200SX, or more popularly known as the Nissan Silvia, has gotten a bit of a surge in popularity over the past few years. The emergence of drifting, as well as the anime Initial D, has made the 200SX a legend. Here in the Philippines, 2nd hand units are commanding high prices despite the car being around 10 years old. Being a 2 door coupe and seeing as how Nissan Philippines only imported a limited number of units, making a Silvia stand out from the crowd should not be too difficult of a proposition.

The S14 Silvia you see here is the result of meticulous attention to detail. Starting life as a completely stock green unit, the car has transformed to a red hot coupe that is bound to turn heads. Since most units imported by Nissan were equipped with an Automatic Transmission, the first order of the day for this Silvia was a Manual Transmission conversion. With that taken care of, careful attention was paid to extracting the most power out of the already potent SR20DET. A Turbonetics T04E turbine is matched to a Greddy 24R Intercooler and Greddy E-manage to force feed the engine. A Sard fuel regulator and Sard 550cc high flow injectors take care of the fueling needs. Finally, a full 3-inch exhaust system with titanium Espelir muffler finishes off the engine work, yielding an astonishing 308 horsepower and 298 lb-ft of torque at the wheels.

Power is nothing without control, but in the case of the Silvia, people usually want to lose a bit of control by drifting. Tein Type HE Drift Spec Coilovers were installed on all four corners to better instigate oversteer. Tein, Nismo, and Greddy bars and braces add to the stiffness of the chassis. A Brembo brake system from a R34 Nissan Skyline GTR was installed at the front and coupled with Endless brake pads to ensure that if the going gets too tough, the brakes will always bite.

Arguably, the thing that sets this Silvia apart from most is the exterior. A full M Sports widebody kit including front and rear bumpers, front and rear oversized fenders contribute to the hulking stance of the car. M Sports carbon fiber front canards and diffuser adds to front downforce while a Sard carbon fiber GT Wing adds downforce to the rear. Finishing touches include M Sports carbon fiber hood and C-West GT style carbon fiber mirrors. A bright shade of red was painted over the car by the professionals from Alex Car Restoration. Finally, a set of rare and wide 18 x 9.5 Volk Racing CE28N wheels were mounted on the front while an even wider pair of 18 x 10.5 were mounted on the rear.

The interior is kept simple but all parts installed are of the highest quality. BRIDE ZETA II seats ensure that the driver and passenger are kept snuggly in place during wild oversteering maneuvers. A Nismo JTC Steering wheel and Nismo GT shift knob is utilized while Sard gauges ensure timely monitoring of engine vitals.

With a Silvia that looks and performs like this car, it’s no wonder that Nissan’s sports coupe is as popular as ever.

Ex-Philippines leader Corazon Aquino dies at 76

Mourners place flowers on a banner of the late former Philippine ...

Former President Corazon “Cory” C. Aquino passed away early Saturday morning August 1, Philippine time after a long battle with colon cancer. She was 76.

Deedee Siytangco, the former President’s spokesperson, confirmed Aquino’s demise this morning. The nation is certain to mourn the loss of the country’s Icon of Democracy.

Aquino died three days after her family declared that her health condition had stabilized.

Siytangco said last Wednesday that “her (Cory’s) children said she’s now stable.”

On Thursday, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) said it is one with the Filipino people not only in praying for the cancer-stricken former president but also in thanking the latter for restoring freedom and democracy in the country.

“We join the Filipino people in thanking her for the freedom and democracy that she helped bring back to the country in 1986,” CBCP president Jaro Archbishop Angel Lagdameo said in a letter to Noynoy.

“The country will forever be grateful for the sacrifices she and her husband, Ninoy, have offered in response to the dream and challenge that our country is worth dying for,” he said.

Last July 13, the CBCP offered a mass for Mrs. Aquino’s recovery during the 99th Plenary Assembly at the Pope Pius XII Catholic Center on UN Ave., Manila. “Together we pray for her, God’s will be done,” Lagdameo said.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines (CEAP) asked its member-schools to pray and offer masses for the country’s former leader.

Aside from offering prayers and masses, the CEAP also asked its members to tie yellow ribbons, wear yellow bands and shirts, and hang streamers to show their support and love for Mrs. Aquino.

Earlier, Aquino's former Tourism secretary, Rafael Alunan, also talked of Cory’s humility even during her time as the highest official of the land.

Alunan lauded the efforts of Aquino's friends and former Cabinet officers in spearheading the "Tie a Yellow Ribbon" campaign to show support for Aquino.

“I think the Filipino people will not forget Cory Aquino and yellow will always symbolize her purity in pushing for reforms,” he said.

The response to the campaign proves “the people yearn for those good times with Cory, when we're all together organizing and fighting for the common good,” Alunan said.

From a news site:

At the time of her death, the 76-year-old widow was confined in a private room at the Makati Medical Center’s ninth floor.

Doctors had strongly advised to keep the former President in her hospital room so she could get immediate medical attention after her cancer spread from her colon to the liver, said Noynoy. Aquino's weakened state made it impossible for her to undergo further chemotherapy.

Aquino was diagnosed with colon cancer in March 2008. She had chemotherapy and underwent surgery last April. She returned to hospital confinement last June 25 due to continued loss of appetite caused by fluid buildup in her stomach.

A statement from Former Finance Secretary Jose T. Pardo, a staunch supporter of Aquino read, "President Cory has earned her place in history as the leader who brought back hope to our country. She was our guiding light during those dark moments. She is an icon, beacon of democracy. She will live on forever in our hearts."

Last Monday, Alberto Lim, executive director of the influential Makati Business Club (MBC), issued a statement noting that aside from restoring democracy in the Philippines, former President Aquino had also “saved the business sector from the cronies of the late Ferdinand Marcos.”

Aquino's “historic” contribution to the business sector prompted the MBC to organize a nine-day noontime novena Mass, which started Monday.

“When President Aquino restored our democracy, she also salvaged the business sector, which was at that time being taken over by Marcos cronies. Democracy is very vital in business. If not for her, there is no vibrant business sector in the country," Lim said.

2009 Trans Sport Show

2009 Trans Sport Show

The longest running auto show catering to the aftermarket and auto supplier recently celebrated its 18th year, as the 2009 Trans Sport Show (TSS) celebrated a score and eight years of fervor for automotive ardor. The opening tugged at a lot of heartstrings, as the reknowned Ramirez clan were on hand for the ribbon cutting ceremony. Immediately after the ribbon cutting, the rest of the crowd witnessed the unveiling of a booth (near the orange R35 Nissan Skyline of Coy Enriquez and Alex Restoration) that depicted the late Philippine motorsports icon Pocholo Ramirez, a video of his last “flying lap” (which also can be seen on YouTube) and his racing suit and helmet encased in glass.Aside from the said booth, cars ranging from 1948 Buicks to R35 GT-R Nissan Skylines were on display during the five-day affair. Crowds upon crowds swooped down on the hall to get an experience some only wish they could feel - albeit even for a brief moment – and over 22 awards were handed out to various vehicles that best represented show car characteristics. The “Best of Show” award went to a sunset yellow 1948 Buick Roadmaster owned by Juanito de la Cruz and entered by Alfred Motorworks. Ending up second was a silver 1959 Lancia Zagato owned by Bu Corcuera and entered by REG Restoration. A “Concept and Execution Award” went to a 1974 Volkwagen Beetle limo owned by Ramon Orlina, the “2009 TSS Rookie of the Show” citation went to Christine K. Gamboa and her 1994 Honda Civic ESi, and the “Best Body Kit” went to Larry Palad’s silver Nissan Skyline R35 GT-R and entered by A-Toy Body Kits. Outstanding Showmanship was lauded to John Lee Hagoriles’s red/chroma 2005 Honda Civic VTEC 3. Concept One’s Samuel Liuson toted a near-perfect rendition of Fernando Amorsolo’s Cry of Balintawak on his white 1997 Lexus LS 400, garnering him the “Best in Graphics” award. Best Engine Display went to a silver 2000 Honda Civic EK owned by Alan Lim, while Best in Vintage went to the white 1963 Lincoln Continental droptop of Lee Martin Kierulf. Art Galang’s olive drab-clad 1968 Kaiser Jeep got a Best in Classic Utility Vehicle citation. Speaking of old school cars, the Vintage Cars division was a hotly contested one, with Juanito de la Cruz’s yellow 1975 Mitsubishi Minica surprisingly getting the top spot. It beat out Philippine Daily Tribune’s Olson Camacho and his yellow 1971 Opel GT (with modification by A-Toy Body Kits) and a blue 1972 Toyota Celica owned by ManilaStandardToday’s Dino Ray Directo III.Then there were certain cars that managed to wow the crowds, either for performance mods or exterior looks that were either enticing enough for people to inquire about having the same setups, being odd in a lukewarm way, or cool enough for pictures. An orange 2008 Mazda 3 owned by Francis Uyehara and toting a bodykit penned by Careation Bodykits and Paintings had a widemouth front end that reminded many – including this writer – of the front mug of a baleen whale. Kenneth Yu/Finland Audio’s 2005 Toyota Previa was a temple of boom for entertaining music, while a British racing green 1964 Triumph TR4 (owned by Lito Aguila and restored by JCB Bodyshop) turned heads at the middle left part of the SM Megamall Megatrade Hall.Keeping in line with the patriotic theme, the Aftermarket Mafia had Atoy Llave’s Nissan Skyline R33 GT-R had the “three stars and a sun” motif (inspired by Francis Magalona) adorning its flanks, along with Samuel Liuson’s flat black Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X (albeit in tasteful color matching graphics). Atoy Llave also brought in his latest marketing creation – casual shoes (co-designed with Accel) that carried the Philippine patriotic motif. Speedlab brought in performance modified versions of the current Toyota Yaris, Mitsubishi Lancer and Honda Civic - along with full blown setups of the previous model Subaru Impreza STi and Ford Focus 2.0L petrol – and all were clad in the signature white/black/red livery of the aforementioned tuning shop. Lastly, those that were looking for abstract automotive art found it in Dempsey Uy’s predominantly black 2008 Toyota Yaris, which toted graphics reminiscent of Jean Paul Basquiat’s or Joan Miro’s masterpieces.Despite troubling economic times that brought many an automotive manufacturer to its knees, the 18th iteration of the Trans Sport Show gave auto enthusiasts and pundits quite an audio-visual thrill.
